Equality of Opportunity Policy

This policy takes account of The Equality Act 2010.

This policy should be read in conjunction with the Special Educational Needs Policy and has links to the Admissions Policy and several HR policies.

Respect for all human beings implies equal opportunities for all people in society – children and adults.

We need to respond to and celebrate with our children and families the richness and diversity of our culture, to share and understand the ways of others and appreciate the value of difference.

Discriminatory language, behaviour or attitudes are not tolerated.

The Equality Act 2010 identifies 9 protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

At Parkview Nursery School we do not discriminate against people on the basis of any of the above characteristics and we promote inclusive practice with children and adults.

Aims of this policy:

  • To eliminate discrimination
  • To advance equality of opportunity
  • To foster good relations between children, families and staff

Implementation

All staff work together to make Parkview Nursery a welcoming place for all, where everyone’s characteristics and opinions are listened to and respected.

Staff are aware of the learning opportunities they present to children, how these opportunities are taken by the children and how inequality can be dealt with.

All areas of the Nursery building are welcoming to children of both sexes and areas and activities are not be seen as specifically for boys or girls. Children are seen as individuals and experiences planned to reflect this. Assessment and evaluation is carried out through close observation of the child.

Books, dolls, posters and all toys are carefully chosen to challenge stereo typing and discrimination and reflect and celebrate diversity and difference.

We show respect for traditions, festivals and customs, (e.g. food, dress) and where appropriate make provision for their observance

While staff model inclusive practice and language on an on-going basis any discriminatory language or behaviour used either by children or adults is challenged.

Staff work as a team, each having an important and complementary role to play in school. Staff development opportunities are available for all staff and regular meetings take place where the contribution of each member of staff is valued equally.

Should any member of staff have a grievance, it should be dealt with through the appropriate mechanism.

Parents as Partners

We work closely with parents through our induction procedures and on-going contact to ensure that we know about a child’s family and culture. This enables us to ensure all families are included.

Resources

Resources reflect the attitudes we wish the children to grow up with. It is important to choose resources carefully which do not highlight differences in a negative or flippant way.

Resources that reflect the culture of children attending the setting are provided.

Resources that reflect different characteristics are also included at all times in the setting to promote acceptance and familiarity.

Assessment of resources and provision is on-going.

We are members of the Community Development Education Centre (CDEC) and use their resources and training to ensure our provision supports children’s social, moral and cultural development.

Staffing

The Governing Body adheres to the policies of the L.E.A. and must uphold anti- discriminatory laws.

Admissions

The admission of children to this school must not be prohibited on grounds of gender, creed, race, class or disability.

Incidents of inequality in school, whether to children or adults should be dealt with, at source and then if necessary by Head teacher and/or Governors. Necessary information about such incidents will be shared and acted upon
